"The fact is, in order to improve health outcomes for communities, we have to start where people live, learn, work, and play." — Michelle Obama, Lawyer, Author & former First Lady of the United States
Framing within health equity is the conscious consideration of words and phrases used when acknowledging and advocating for communities of people. (Rural Health Information Hub)
For example: When discussing the social determinants of health of a specific community, framing looks like acknowledging “the choices we make depend on the choices we have available to us. It's hard to be healthy without access to good jobs, good homes, and good schools” (Rural Health Information Hub).
This kind of framing avoids blaming an individual or community for the health outcomes they may experience.
