"Be present in all things and thankful for all things."
- Maya Angelou
Happy Thanksgiving from Health Equity Solutions to you! During this season of gratitude, we want to share how deeply we appreciate you. Our community, partners, & supporters are true champions for health equity! On Thanksgiving Day, let us also remember that it is a day of mourning for many Native people.

Colorism  is the allocation of privilege and favor to those with lighter skin colors and disadvantage to those with darker skin colors. Colorism is rooted in racism and can occur within communities of color. It often is most obvious when judging people’s physical attractiveness, but goes well beyond these surface judgments.

The HES team is mid-way reading Dare To Lead, a book by Brené Brown that explores how courageous leaders can practice values to help their teams overcome challenging situations and foster creativity.

Great leadership requires courage, and Brown elucidates why courage and vulnerability are so inseparable. She describes “rumbling with vulnerability” as being open to tough conversations instead of brushing things under the carpet. At HES, we enourage difficult, honest, and vulnerable conversations within and outside the organization.

We are looking forward to finishing it in the upcoming month! Join the HES team in reading this excellent book and share your comments with us!

In 2022, HES staff have read one book per quarter for a total of 4 books. Let us know what book recommendations you have for 2023!
